Bank Building History: 1890 to 2003

C.H. Estabrook, President and Walter "Walt" D. Calwell a talented cashier created the Citizens Bank of Lane in 1890. A well capitalized and operated Bank... From a cash flow perspective Citizens Bank was considered one of the "safest" banks in Kansas at the turn of the century.

In 1913, the General Store directly to the south of Citizens Bank burned to the ground causing minor damage to the bank.

In 1923, Citizens Bank fails due to insufficient funds. Three large loans and a failure to meet payment caused its demise. Later in 1923, the Lane State Bank was organized. It was robbed of $600.00 shortly, before it closed for good in 1936, in the midst of the Great Depression.

In April 1948, the two-story I.O.O.F. building (now the community building) directly to the north of the bank building burned causing significant damage to the bank. However, it was repaired and from 1949 to the late 1970's was used as a family home.

In 2002, Danny Davis purchased the building and returned it to its original turn of the century mint condition.
